New 'Jac' Owner Donates Old Sign to Kiwanis Club

Eve Alves, owner of Sanibel’s newest eatery, The Jac Island Grille & Rum Bar, has already shown her true Island colors, by donating the old Jacaranda Restaurant’s iconic sign to The Kiwanis Club of Sanibel & Captiva. The emblem will be offered at auction during the Club’s annual Spaghetti Dinner, in February 2019.

Alves, who opened “The Jac” in May, expressed excitement at becoming “an active member of the Sanibel community. Donating the Jacaranda sign to help the Kiwanis Club’s charitable efforts launches my commitment to the Island that has so warmly welcomed me and my staff,” she said.

Current Kiwanis president Jason Smith and Kiwanis board member and past president Eric Pfeifer, owner of Pfeifer Realty, gratefully accepted the sign from Alves. Pfeifer called Alves’s gift “a link between Sanibel’s history and Kiwanis’s charitable endeavors. Revenues from the Spaghetti Supper and its silent and live auctions provide essential support to dozens of Island causes. We hope that other businesses will join with Eve and Kiwanis in finding creative means to support Island non-profits,” he said.

The Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner is held annually at the Sanibel Community House. The event features an all-you-can-eat Italian pasta dinner, with spaghetti, meatballs and sauce, salad, garlic bread, wine or soda. The dinner concludes in the Great Hall with dessert and coffee, music and dancing, a raffle, and the two auctions.

Revenues from the Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner, a Sanibel tradition since the 1980’s, fund Island youth recreational and educational activities, as well as Kiwanis’s comprehensive Scholarship Program.

Kiwanis International is dedicated to “Serving the Children of the World.” Kiwanis Club of Sanibel & Captiva, founded in 1973, distributes approximately $100,000 annually to dozens of causes that help children of the Islands and of Southwest Florida.

The Jac Island Grille & Rum Bar, located at 1223 Periwinkle Way, is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the bar remaining open until 2 a.m. Happy Hour is from noon to 6 p.m., and Sunday Brunch, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
